Spray Tan Preparation Tips for Superior Results

Exfoliation is Key!

We cannot over stress the importance of preparation by the client for a long lasting, even tan. Pre-session exfoliation is necessary either the night before or morning of the appointment. Clear away any dry, dead skin cells with a pH balancing exfoliating scrub such as Norvell Renewing Sunless Exfoliator or the Revive Skin Refining Scrub also by Norvell.

Avoid using Dial, Irish Spring, Lever 2000, or in-shower moisturizers/oils. These products can neutralize the DHA bronzing action within the skin. Certain products will leave a residue on the skin that acts like a barrier. This makes for an uneven sunless tan.

Norvell Pre-Tan Exfoliator is available for $7.95 for 2oz or $16.95 for 8oz.

For the most thorough treatment, use a deep exfoliating mitt, such as Dermasuri, no less than 24-hours prior to your session. Made with a unique fabrique texture, the mitt visibly removes surface layers of buildup and dead skin instantly. The mitt catches and sloughs off dead cells by simply rolling it off your skin. Revealing your healthy and smooth skin underneath.

Don't create sunless barriers

As mentioned above, residue from bathing products can hinder your sunless tanning results. Additionally, you should refrain from applying anything to the skin that may act as a barrier between the sunless solution and the skin. Deep penetration is key to beautiful lasting color. For this reason, do not apply lotions, creams, or perfumes prior to session. Also, use deodorant sparingly.

Don’t panic if you didn’t get the chance to exfoliate prior to your appointment. The handy Norvell Pre Tan ExMitt Body Buff is your answer. A convenient, fuss-free way to gently exfoliate the skin and balance pH levels prior to sunless tan application. The elimination of dead skin cells, along with the boost of amino acid levels, allows you to maximize your color results. No water required. This product is only $5.95 and is easy to use at the time of service just before getting your custom spray tan.

Spray Tan Attire

During the spray tan

It’s our most commonly asked question.

“What should I wear while getting spray tanned?”

At SprayChic we provide the amenities like hairnets, hair ties, nose filters, disposable thongs and sticky sandals. Our female clients typically prefer to tan topless to avoid tan lines. We have 2 different options of disposable thongs. The typical g-string thong or an adhesive strapless thong. All amenities are complimentary.

We understand that not everyone is comfortable baring it all. In that case, we suggest wearing darker colored undergarments or bathing suit. The solution will wash out of all materials except silk and nylon blend.

Please note that we are an all female staff and ask that our male clients plan on wearing boxer briefs, briefs or even a thong is fine. We appreciate your understanding.

After the spray tan

Plan on wearing loose fitting dark clothing to your appointment or bring loose clothes to change into. Putting on tight clothing after a spray tan can rub or smear bronzers, especially around the knees, elbows and waist. One tip we give our female clients before they get dressed is to go without the bra after the spray tan. It may not matter in every situation, but putting a bra back on can leave a tan line. If you are preparing for an event that will be showing off the shoulders or back we want to ensure that your tan is flawless.

Depending on the season, our suggestions will vary on what to wear on your feet. Flip flops, sandals or slip on shoes without socks are the ideal options. Putting on socks directly after your spray tan will prevent the tan from absorbing into the skin. Of course, being in Michigan means that we aren’t wearing flip flops year round. Putting on boots after the spray tan is ok, but no socks.

Overwhelmed?

Being prepared is part of having the most satisfactory results. Reading through all of this information may seem overwhelming. In fact, we know it’s overwhelming to those who have never tried spray tanning. The truth is, we as a staff have broken all of these rules. We have also had clients show up unprepared and we are able to work around whatever it may be. Heck, we even walk our clients out with an oversized umbrella if it’s raining! (Yes, that is also something we suggest having with you.) With that being said, we don’t want you to feel like it’s impossible to have great results if you don’t follow every detail. This is a guide for you to know what you should do for optimal results.
